Paxil Birth Defects
The antidepressant Paxil (generic name paroxetine) has been linked to birth defects in multiple studies. This drug was first approved for use in the FDA in 1992 and has since received scrutiny due to the reportedly serious injuries and side effects. Birth defects are one of the confirmed side effects associated with Paxil, Paxil CR and Pexeva, all forms of paroxetine. These are more likely to occur when a woman takes Paxil in the first trimester of her pregnancy. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has issued multiple Public Health Advisories concerning birth defects and Paxil. Congenital heart defects, such as septal defects, innterrupted aortic arch (A, B and C), persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) and abdominal (Omphalocele) and cranial (Craniosynostosis) birth defects have all been linked to Paxil.
Paxil and Congenital Heart Defects
In December of 2005 the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory regarding Paxil and congenital heart defects. This issue was based upon two separate studies conducted by U.S. and Swedish researchers. The outcome of the studies? A warning to both doctors and patients that taking Paxil during pregnancy may lead to an increased risk to the potential of congenital heart defects.
Increased Risks of PPHN Due to Paxil
More recently, the results of a case-controlled study of Paxil was published by the New England Journal of Medicine that showed an increased risk of PPHN in babies whose mothers took Paxil or another SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant during pregnancy. This study in particular showed that PPHN was six times more common in infants exposed to SSRI antidepressants while in the womb. The FDA issued another Public Health Advisory shortly after this study was published.
